Wolf3D on the iPhone and a new jQuery plugin

Published on Wednesday, 21st October 2009.

I took a chance downloading Wolfenstein 3D on the iPhone, but to my surprise, it's very playable. The first thing I did however was change the controls to allow strafing. It's a great little time waster, I eve play it more Modern Combat: Sandstorm and Doom Resurrection.

I think the reason it works well is simply because the game was simple to begin with, and it has now been made simplified for the iPhone. Nothing is worse then having a bunch of controls taking up half the screen space. In contrast to the original Wolfenstein 3D, doors open automatically, and changing guns is done automatically. The score has also been removed, and picking up the treasure now gives the player another hitpoint, able to exceed 100.

What I found especially cool is that John Carmack himself had worked on the port. He has a great article over on the Id website about developing the port. Having grown up with the original Wolf 3D, Doom and Quake, Carmack is somewhat of a programming hero to me.

Besides playing this game, and being busy at work, I have also developed a jQuery plugin to automatically highlight search terms used to find the page. It's still in the process of having it's bugs ironed out, but keep an eye on it!

Wolfenstein was the first game I every played on a PC.
Good memories, so I'm going to go download for my iPod Touch.

    Thanks for the heads up.

P.s Duke Nukem 3D was probably my favourite FPS game on PC of 'possibly' all time. That, or COD and the Battlefield series'.
